Dr. Kike Jimenez - Gastric Bypass

How does the gastric bypass work?

Gastric bypass works by reducing the size of the stomach (gastric pouch) and diverting it to the small intestine.

By reducing the stomach’s capacity and restricting the absorption of nutrients at the intestinal level, the volume of food intake and calorie consumption is proportionally limited.

Additionally, gastric bypass may influence hormones related to appetite, reducing the desire to overeat.

Is Gastric bypass surgery an option for me?

Gastric Bypass is a surgical option for those who struggle with severe obesity and have failed to lose weight effectively with conventional methods such as diet and exercise. This intervention involves reducing the size of the stomach and modifying the digestive system to limit both food intake and calorie absorption.

  • Eligibility for gastric bypass is generally based on Body Mass Index (BMI), which evaluates weight concerning height. It is usually considered for people with a BMI of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 to 39.9 with obesity-related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes or hypertension.
  • In cases of revision surgery in patients who have had a sleeve performed with insufficient weight loss or weight gain.
  • Before proceeding with surgery, it is crucial to evaluate the patient’s overall health and willingness to commit to the lifestyle changes necessary post-operatively. This includes following a specific diet and exercising regularly to maintain weight loss and prevent long-term complications.

FAQ´s

Will I need vitamin supplements after bariatric bypass surgery?

Yes, you will need vitamin supplements, especially vitamins B12, D, and calcium, since surgery can affect your body’s ability to absorb certain nutrients from food.

I always tell my patients, “you are undergoing surgery NOT sick” zero bed time. In the clinic you will be hospitalized for one night only. In two or three days, you will be able to be almost at 100% of your abilities. After 8 days, you should start the cardiovascular exercise plan.

Gastric bypass will significantly impact your life in the long term, helping you lose weight and improve your overall health. However, it will also require permanent changes to your lifestyle, including a carefully controlled diet and regular exercise, as well as ongoing medical follow-up to monitor your health and adjust your treatment when needed.
